SESSION 2: Philosophy and Ethics of AI and Emerging Technologies

Tuesday, 10th Feb

  • 12:30-1:00 pm: Lunch
  • 1:00-1:50 pm: Talk and Discussion.
  • Venue: Earth Sciences ES231

Speaker: Dr Travis LaCroix (Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy)

Chair: Dr Van Anh Le, Durham Law School

About the session

Building on earlier discussions of authorship and ownership, this session turns to philosophical and ethical questions about responsibility, agency, and moral accountability in AI systems. It examines how those concepts, which justify attribution, reward, and control in IP law, are challenged by automated and data-driven technologies and invites reflection on whether existing ethical frameworks are adequate for governing AI, or whether new ways of thinking are required.

Audience participation is encouraged.

Open to all members of the Durham University community. Refreshments will be provided.

Please RSVP here for catering purpose.

This project is a short interdisciplinary series of three sessions exploring how IP, authorship, and ownership shape contemporary research, innovation, and entrepreneurship at Durham University. It responds to growing interest among postgraduate researchers and colleagues across mathematics, philosophy, and the sciences, and aims to foster sustained collaboration between Durham Law School and other departments through structured, accessible discussions.
